Top Ten Favorite Books Set in Britain

Top Ten Tuesday is hosted by The Broke and The Bookish.  This week the topic is my top books with a setting of my choice.  I've struggled with this one, as I like reading about different places and such.  I had decided on going for a general city theme, and then I decided -like last night decided - that I'd be all patriotic and go for a British theme!

1. Rivers of London

2. The City's Son

3. Etiquette and Espionage

 4. Pride and Prejudice
Any excuse to show off this glorious cover!

5. Jane Eyre

6. Atonement

7. Apocalypse Cow

8. The Graveyard Book

9. Her Fearful Symmetry
Okay, so compared to The Time Traveler's Wife, Her Fearful Symmetry isn't that good.  However, I will give Audrey Niffenegger props for her descriptions of Highgate Cemetery.

10. A Monster Calls

Bonus books because there are too many good books set in Britain:
The Eyre Affair and Hollow Earth

What setting did you guys choose this week?  What are your favourite books set in Britain?  Let me know!

  1. I chose dystopian settings for my list this week! I love that you've picked Britain. There's a lot of good books that are based in Britain. I love that cover of Jane Eyre! :-)

    1. I love the Jane Eyre cover too! I think it's really unique and different to the copies that have a portrait of a girl. Just wish that it wasn't so expensive so I could have a copy that I can just sit and stare at it all day!

  2. I like your choice of setting. I hope to make it to Britain some day.

And what a fabulous cover that is for P&P!

    1. I hope you do too, it's a lovely place to visit! Even if the weather can be a bit temperamental, but that's all part of the fun!

Yep, it's part of the Pulp the Classics range. I think it's my favourite out of the current bunch!

  3. SO MANY GOOD BOOKS. Way to go, Britain.

Rivers of London looks interesting, as does Hollow Earth.

    1. I know right?! *pats Britain on the back*

Rivers of London is really good! Punch and Judy and magic and London history and police work all rolled up into one book.

I can't say the same for the next two books in the series though, which is a shame. Although I've been told that the fourth book is a huge improvement!

  4. I had a hard time with this topic, too. I almost chose books set in the U.K., then decided to go with my favorite novels set in the American South. I love TTT topics that give us some choice, but man, it can be tough to come up with 10 books that fit the theme!

  5. Wow, I love just about everything on your list! That's an awesome P&P cover -- Darcy smoking! Love it. I haven't read #1, 2, or 7 (but will check them out). Just got a copy of Hollow Earth! And I absolutely agree about Her Fearful Symmetry -- loved the Highgate setting, even though the plot itself didn't always work for me. Great list!

  7. One of my favouritest books set in England is Kathleen Winsor's sweeping historical romance Forever Amber, set in Restoration England and often compared to Gone with the Wind. I know most British books tend to be set in London, but I'd love to find a book set in Birmingham, where the British branch of my family tree hails from. It might help to counter the stereotype of Brummies as uneducated and hicks that I've heard about.

    1. I know it's not everyone's cup of tea, but I really like Birmingham city centre. It helps that they have a large Waterstones bookshop (although I've since been informed that the one I went to was the small one...so I can only imagine what the big one would be like). Although I've never heard of Brummies being described as hicks before. Now rural Suffolk and Norfolk, that's another matter. There's a reason why they say 'normal for Norfolk'!

I wish I had some recommendations for you, but will keep an eye out for any Birmingham based books.

    1. Thanks :) There's other books that have received the same treatment from Pulp The Classics, but I think the P&P is the best. Never fails to make me smile.

    1. Yes, A Monster Calls is lovely. One of those books where I didn't even realise how attached I was getting to the story. Hope you enjoy it when you get around to reading!

  11. Britain! A brilliant choice, if I do say so. I went with WWII but a few of mine also had the Britain part of things.

That cover to Rivers of London is beautiful. I've never heard of that book before!
