Top Ten Best/Worst Movie Adaptations (you could pick best or worst OR split it in half)

Top Ten Tuesday is hosted by The Broke and The Bookish.  This week is all about movie adaptations.  I thought that I'd have a lot more movies in the worst category this week, but hey, turns out I'm okay with quite a few book to movie adaptations! I decided on excluding the Harry Potter films from my list because it's a given that they're the worst adaptations of books ever.......*

The Best:

We Need to Talk About Kevin

 Let The Right One In

The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo

10 Things I Hate About You

The Great Gatsby

Never Let Me Go

Warm Bodies

Anna Karenina

 Life of Pi

 And the WORST:

The Time Traveller's Wife
Matt knew that The Time Traveller's Wife was my favourite book.  Thus, he assumed that I'd want to go see the movie.  My gut was telling me that I did not want see the movie, but my curiosity got the better of me.  I kept telling myself it can't be that bad...yet it can.  Horribly miscast and clunky; avoid this movie at all costs and read the book instead!

Northern Lights/The Golden Compass
The Golden Compass does not even come close to conveying the greatness of Phillip Pullman's Northern Lights.  And that ending.  Just URGH!  Why aren't you dead?!

Agree/Disagree with any of my choices?  Tell me why!  What made it onto your lists this week?

*JUST KIDDING! :)

  1. Do you have a preference on which Girl with the Dragon Tattoo was better? I have seen neither and have yet to read the book.

I don't think I have a preference. Both are good adaptations that capture the essence of the story, while omitting a lot of the political stuff that's included in the book. This is in spite of my initial reservations about the U.S version, because in my eyes Daniel Craig just isn't Mikael. However, by the end of the movie, although he wasn't the Mikael of the book, he was still rather good.

I'd recommend either of the films even if you haven't read the book, but just bear in mind some scenes are really uncomfortable to watch.

    1. Yeah, it's not good...although I do know people who don't mind it! I'm not sure anything could live up to the movie in my head that plays when I read the book. I should have known better and just ignored it until it went away!

  3. Let the Right One In! The GOOD version, nice! And yayyy Warm Bodies, that was a really good adaptation even if a bit lighthearted.

    1. I haven't seen the U.S version, in fact I had forgotten all about it, is it bad? Should I avoid at all costs?

Yep, I thought Warm Bodies is a great example of how to adapt a book, keep the soul/essence and everything else will fall into place.

  5. 10 Things is the best! I love it. I really liked the US version of The Girl, but haven't seen the Swedish version. Great list!

    1. Thanks :)

Agreed! Watched it the other night, and I still love 10 Things as much as I did when I was 16!

I thought I wouldn't like the US version over the Swedish film, but it was a really good adaptation. I wonder if I would have a different opinion if I had seen them in a different order though (I went Book, Swedish, US).
